Description

One of a paired set of spainted clay tiles. #100 in Jason Garcia's series of “Tewa Tales of Each piece is made from native clay, painted with multiple colors made from natural pigments and traditionally fired. Each piece is inspired by graphic novels and early comic book art and the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and depict the Spanish defending themselves from the attack of the Pueblo warrior. The date on each of the two pieces “Pajogeri XXXIII” meaning Summer 2023. This tile depicts a Franciscan Monk and a Conquistador with the Kiva in the background along with the flames and clouds. On the bottom corner is “100” for issue number 100. In the sky are clouds which are a signature of Jason’s art. The coloration on these pieces is striking with the clay showing through and the subtle sky. Note as well how the clouds and the burning church in the background carry over from one tile to the next. Signed with Jason's Tewa name, Okuu Pin, which means Turtle Mountain.
