| Description | Palm leaf book (lontar). Ten long, narrow palm leaf pages held between flat bamboo covers by a cord strung through both pages and covers. Illustrations on one side of each page, text on the other. "Text and illustrations [of old Balinese palm-leaf books called lontar] are engraved on palm leaf strips with a fine stylus and then darkened with the soot of burned palm-leaf spines rubbed into the grooves - a procedure still used in Bali by lontar copyists." First page appears to be upside down. |
