| Description | Sommerville: Oriental green jasper. Justinian, surnamed the Great, Emperor of Constantinople, AD 527 - 565, husband of the beautiful actress Theodora. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case N. Vermeule: Oriental Green Jasper. Cameo. (Pendant gold setting which once fitted in a box?). Laureate draped bust of bearded man to left., identified by Sommerville as Emperor Justinian (527-565 A.D.) and certainly appearing to represent a ruler of the Middle Ages. Perhaps also intended for an ancient ruler as seen in Middle Ages. |
