Legging

Deerskin, painted yellow; two piece. Fringing full length of outside from extra piece caught in seam; self-cut fringing around bottom. Vertical beaded band sewn on front from top to c. 1 1/2" above bottom. Lazy stitch. Blue background with stepped triangles in black, pink and yellow. Thongs tied through leggings on outside of beaded band; each has small cowrie shell attached. A beaded patch has been added at a later date at bottom of band-other beads removed for it; diamond shaped with edging in blue and black over yellow thread on velvet; blue deer in center and framing in white and orange beads; looks Woodland in origin. One legging has part of fringe at bottom cut off. Late 1800's.
