| Description | Sommerville: Sardonyx. Aelius Caesar, adopted by the Emperor Hadrian, who allowed hiim to take the title of Caesar. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case S. Vermeule: Sardonyx. Cameo. (Broken across bottom to imitate antique work). Bust, probably representing the young Bacchus, facing to right. Head is identified by Sommerville as a portrait of Aelius Caesar, adopted son of Hadrian. |
