Description

A sample of wood used for dyeing in Indochina. There is a label with it that reads: "SAPPAN WOOD Caesalpinia sappan Yields a valuable red dye. Largely exported to both Europe and America INDO-CHINA". A card with it reads: "SAPPAN WOOD Exported to Europe and United States. yields a valuable RED DYE. Caesalpina sappan TONKIN + CAMBODIA COCHIN-CHINA + SIAM". A paper with French handwriting reads: "Cambodge 6556 mat-tinct Bois Sappan Caesalpinia Sappan L Leguminosae".
