| Description | Short skirt of black, twisted plant fiber, doubled over and caught between two criss-crossing strands at top. Similar twisted black fiber and construction technique in skirts 1995.X.16489 and 1994.X.16490. This is the only one of the three skirts with a tag, on which "Tahiti" is written in pencil, crossed out, and replaced by "New Caledonia." What appears to be a skirt of this sort can be seen in the center of a Freres Dufy photo reproduced on p. 106 of Decouverte photographique de la Nouvelle-Caledonie 1848-1900 (Serge Kakou, 1998). Exhibited at l'Exposition universelle de Paris 1900. |
