Description

A kakau (adze handle) made of wood. The handle is carved from a single piece of wood. The top of the blade has a flat surface that would hold the toki (adze blade) and a groove near one end where the cord binding would be placed. The handle of the kakau is curved slightly in two places. A plaited muka (New Zealand flax fiber) cord is wound around the middle of the handle.

Generally, a stone toki would be bound to a kakau and used for wood carving.
