Description

A pouwhenua (long-handled striking weapon) made of a single piece of wood. The rau (blade) is flared, undecorated, and tapers down to a point (mata). Near the point is a small carving of three crecents with pākati (dog tooth notches) inside. There is a circular perforation at the tip of the point.

The pouwhenua is a double-handed weapon used to stab, parry, and strike. The blade is typically flared and larger than other long-handled striking weapons, ie, the taiaha.
