| Description | Sommerville: Onyx. Ulysses consecrating himself at a shrine before entering the contest for the hand of Penelope. Gold Rings - Intaglios, Case HHH. Vermeule: Onyx. Intaglio. (Modern gilt ring setting and impression) Warrior holding shield and spear approaching a well or shrine at left. He is bearded and wears a crested helmet. Sommerville termed the scene "Ulysses consecrating himself at a shrine before entering the contest for the hand of Penelope" but the scene perhaps represents Achilles lying in wait for Troihus. An inscription appears between warrior and shrine. Roman Republican. |
