| Description | Sommerville: Jasper. Dido, Princess of Tyre in Phoenicia; afterwards she founded Carthage. Vermeule: Greenish Jasper. Cameo. (unmounted) Bust of woman? to right., wearing a radiate crown. Sommerville identifies subject as "Dido, princess of Tryre in Phoenicia," she afterward founded Carthage. Design seems to be copied from some ancient coins perhaps from a Roman imperial portrait of the III A.D. Probably XVth or XVIth work. |
