| Description | Sommerville: Chalcedony Onyx - Venus caressing Ganymedes and instructing him for the high destiny to which he was called. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case B. Vermeule1956 : Venus, Jupiter, Eagle and Ganymede. The latter standing at right with a Phrygian or Amazon (pelta) shield. A vase, symbolic of Ganymede's future task as cup-bearer to the gods lies on the ground at the right. Composition has antique source. Exhibit: Mediterranean, 1700-1850 Neoclassical.
