| Description | Sommerville: Amazon-stone. Maximinus Pius, thirtieth Emperor of Rome. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case QQ. Vermeule: Greenish Jasper-like stone. (Unmounted) "Amazon stone." Laureate draped bust of the Roman Emperor Maximinus facing to right. (235-238 A.D.) The stone is a contemporary porrtait and its similarity to those on coins suggests it may be the work of a die cutter, or a similar artist in Roman court circles. |
