Headdress

Man's dance headdress (on kawa) (sulphur crested cockatoo). Teardrop shaped frame, pointed end at top. Worn around face, one strap behind the head the other under the chin. Five sulphur crested cockatoo feathers stuck into each side of frame. Two other trimmed feathers ( same sp) with special flexioble (quills) on mounted at the very top of the headdress, one mouted at one side.Traditionally the mounting quills would be cassowary quills. These two wave with the dancer's motions. Work at yok dance, which was borrowed from the Awin/Aekyom. Made by Amboman, clan unknown, living in Kiunga. Purchased from him 3/4/89.
