| Description | Sommerville: Carnelian Onyx. A beautiful Abraxas talisman. A Gnostic gem. Raised inscription "SABAOTE" the name of a god worshipped by the Gnostics of the second century. Abraxas, Gnostic Gems, Etc, Case HH. Vermeule: Sardonyx Carnelian. Cameo. (Modern gold rope pattern) Pendant locket setting. Laureate head facing to right, snake in cista above and a series of Graeco-Roman inscriptions at right and below. 16th or 18th century attempt to imitate a gnostic stone of the III or IVth A.D. |
