| Description | A kōrupe (window lintel), made of a single piece of wood. Central motif of two figures, facing opposite ways, positioned feet-to-feet. One figure is a wheku (carved face that depicts an ancestor) figure, with one three-fingered hand resting upon the middle of the body; the other hand is placed near the mouth. The other figure is a manaia (spiritual guardian) with folded legs. Carved in Ngati Porou style. Made with steel tools, c. 1880. A kōrupe is a horizontal carved lintel placed above a window on a wharenui (meeting house). It can consist of carvings that are made to represent ancestors or elements of spiritual protection. |
