| Description | Guanyin or Manjusri painted as a portrait. The artist is Li Fan 李蕃 (藩) of Huating county, formerly Sonjiang county. He was active during the Qing Dynasty, circa 1740 CE based on dated paintings with a similar subject matter. Inscription reads: 觀音(峨山眉頂上曾修請飾之因 / 功德林中永紶菩提之果) On Mt. Erh-mei, (she) once learned the Buddhist law of purity. In Forest of Merits, (she) attained the Buddhahood. Colophon respectively done by Chu-tan-tze, Chao Yieh-pu. Formerly in the collection of John Calvin Ferguson (1866 - 1945 CE). |
