| Description | A huila makani (pinwheel) made of kapa (Hawaiian bark cloth). A piece of bark cloth has been folded and arranged into the shape of a pinwheel. A patterned bark beater was used in the production of this bark cloth, leaving visible markings in the cloth. The pattern is similar to the Hawaiian bark-cloth beater pattern hoopai (parallel lines). The pinwheel was made in the Museum by Hawaiian sailors in 1898. Huila makani is a toy made of paper or kapa (Hawaiian bark cloth)." |
