| Description | Sommerville: Sardonyx. Helmeted head of a Wallachian Soldier. Intaglios and Their Imprints, Case BBB. Vermeule: Pale sard. Intaglio. (Unmounted) Helmeted head of a bearded Greek ruler of the IV B.C. or later. The curious style of the helmet which terminates in a ram's horn and has an Armenian-type headdress at the top, suggests that he is an East Greek prince or perhaps even a Persian satyr such as those appearing in realistic portraits on Greek tetradrachma of the end of the Vth cent. B.C. Greek or Hellenistic. |
