Description

Brown with groups of black stripes of varying breadth, some thick yellow stripes. Oiled. Possibly made from mamaki (Pipturus sp.) (Kaeppler). Man’s shoulder cloth (kihei) (Ka Hana Kapa) or top layer of sleeping tapa (kapa moe) (Kaeppler). Acquired by the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842) by Titian R. Peale. “Waterproof dress [garment] of oiled ‘tapa.’ Male attire.” on Peale list. Ka Hana Kapa #398.
