| Description | Sommerville: Chalcedony-Onyx. Sappho. The Greek Poetess, native of Mitylene. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case F. Vermeule: Chalcedony Onxy. Cameo (unmounted). Bust of a woman of 5th century type facing to right. Sommerville identifies her as Sappho. Neo-Classic, copying an ancient head, perhaps Aphrodite, which survives in a number of replicas and which has been termed Sappho since the Renaissance. Berges: Lamda Ny is the Greek abbreviation of the modern cutter's name and should be read L. N. what with some probability means Lorenz Natter, a famous gem cutter from Germany during the middle of the 18th. cen. |
