Description

Rectangular wooden tablet (gunyeokpae 군역패 軍役牌 lit. "military service tablet"), with hole for suspension cord, inscribed with the name and other identifying details of a soldier. The text is typical for 19th c. Joseon military tags, but the tablet shows no sign of use, or of the usual authenticating official brand, and so may have been made as a replica in about 1895, after the Joseon system of identity tags had come to an end.
