| Description | Rectangular wooden tablet (gunyeokpae 군역패 軍役牌 lit. "military service tablet"), with hole for suspension cord, inscribed with the name and other identifying details of a soldier. The text is typical for 19th c. Joseon military tags, but the tablet shows no sign of use, or of the usual authenticating official brand, and so may have been made as a replica in about 1895, after the Joseon system of identity tags had come to an end. Front: 御營 Royal Garrison 巡令乎Patrol guard 金大成年三十長四尺面鉄髯疤无 Gim Dae-seong, 30 years old, four feet tall [sic], dark [lit. "iron"] face, with a beard but no scars. Reverse: 住東部 Residing [stationed?] in Eastern District [of the capital, Seoul]. 光緒三年月日入 Enlisted in 3rd year of Guangxu [of the Manchu Qing dynasty, 1877]. |
