Die

One of four circular dice (ulu). The die has two flat faces and rounded sides. One face is undecorated, the opposite has a central X design with one shallow perforation in the center of the disc. The decorated face has a light layer of pink/purple pigment.

The die was made in the Museum by four Hawaiian sailors in 1898.

This set of dice is used in the Hawaiian game of lulu. Lulu is played with four small discs that are shaken in the hands and then cast onto the ground. The game may be conducted according to various rule sets, which often differ based on regional practice or player preference. Common winning conditions include awarding victory to the player who achieves the highest throw in a given round, or to the first player to attain a predetermined target score."
