Askos

Painted duck askos; head is 19th century CE restoration; painted ornament (feathers, etc.). Physical resemblance to duck suggested by very plump body, a duck's head, and a large, spade-shaped tail. No foot, merely a flattened ovoid area on bottom. A spout behind head at other end of body. Strap handle, arched, between spout and head. Middle and upper wall reserved; body feathers indicated by semicircular glaze lines at intervals; tail feathers, by 4 longitudinal glaze stripes. Bottom reserved. Otherwise covered with matte black glaze. Intact. Oyster white clay.
