| Description | Circular wooden tablet (gunyeokpae 군역패 軍役牌), with hole for suspension cord, inscribed with the name and other identifying details of a soldier. The text is typical for 19th c. Joseon military tags, but the tablet shows no sign of use, or of the usual authenticating official brand, and so may have been made as a replica in about 1895, after the Joseon system of identity tags had come to an end. Front: 本兵 Regular soldier 兜???旗乎 [something] banner. 千守一年二十四係京住西部長四尺面鉄髯无疤无 Cheon Su-il, age 24, attached to the capital, stationed in the West District, four feet tall [sic], dark [lit. “iron”] face, without beard and without scars.
