| Description | Ceremonial headdress called "The Lord of the Hawks." Constructed of "all objects of value that had been known to the makers at the time the piece was made" (LS). A wooden mask painted green, black, and red made to resemble a hawk. A beak made from copper curves downward and the tip protrudes into the mouth. The mouth itself is lined with small, shell teeth and the lips are painted red. Eyes are inlaid with abalone shell discs and eyebrows are made from copper plates. Red ears are painted on either side of the head where an animal hide strap wraps around to form the back of the headdress. Thick walrus hide representing the bird's tail is attached to the top of the mask with a painted design. Below the walrus hide, sections of hair are inserted into the wood and hide. |
