| Description | Plaster cast of a Matuatonga figure. The Plaster is painted a reddish-brown to replicate the red volcanic rock of the original figure. The head and body have become detached. The original figure is part of the Sir George Grey collection, currently housed at the Auckland Museum. Sir George Grey's Matuatonga figure is a smaller representation of the original Matuatonga figure present on Mokoia Island, New Zealand. The Matuatonga stone figure is an agricultural god that is associated with the Te Arawa iwi (Tribal Nation). The figure was once worshipped in planting ceremonies on Mokoia. |
