| Description | Wooden identity tag (K. hopae 호패 號牌), carved with name, title, date of birth, and date of registration. Pierced with a hole at the top for hanging string. Hopae "name tags" issued by the Joseon goverment functioned like id cards, inscribed in hanmun (written Chinese) with the individual's name, date of birth, hometown, social class, and the date when they were registered. Front: 北部 Northern District (of the capital Seoul) 幼學朴仁秀甲子生 Junior Scholar, Bak In-su, born 1864. Reverse: 己卯式 Registered in 1879. |
